Privacy Practices

Updated

Drawn Mathematics measures how its pages are read with two services, keeps a small setting or two in your browser, and carries no advertising. This page explains each of them.

Google Analytics

The site uses Google Analytics 4 to see which pages are read and how readers arrive. When it runs, it sets cookies in your browser, and your browser sends Google the address of each page you visit and your IP address, which Google may use to estimate your general location.

When it loads

Whether Google Analytics loads depends on where you are and on what you have chosen:

  • In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, a panel asks first. The same applies in EU territories that have their own country codes, such as Guadeloupe, Réunion and the Åland Islands, and in Gibraltar, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.
  • In those places, Google Analytics does not load at all until you choose Allow: no request goes to Google and no analytics cookie is set. If you choose Decline, it never loads in this browser.
  • The panel also appears, with the same rules, whenever your country cannot be determined.
  • Everywhere else, Google Analytics loads when a page opens, unless you have already chosen Decline in this browser.

When no choice has been saved yet, the page asks this site's own address at Cloudflare for a two-letter country code to decide which case applies. Only that code is read, and it is not stored.

When Google Analytics does load, it is told that advertising storage, the use of your data for advertising and ad personalization are all denied; only analytics storage is allowed. Google signals are turned off, and event data is kept for 14 months.

Changing your choice

Wherever you are, you can open the analytics panel to choose Allow or Decline again. If you switch to Decline on a page where Google Analytics has already loaded, the page reloads without it. Clearing this site's stored data in your browser also removes your choice; in the places listed above, the panel will then ask again.

You can also block Google Analytics on every site with Google's browser add-on (https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout). Google explains how it uses information from sites that use its services at https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Cloudflare Web Analytics

The site is served through Cloudflare, which handles your connection, including your IP address, to deliver pages and protect the site. Cloudflare also adds its Web Analytics code to every page, for every visitor in every region, and the analytics panel above does not control it.

Cloudflare Web Analytics counts page views and measures how quickly pages load, and it sends those measurements to this site's own address (/cdn-cgi/rum). It sets no cookies and uses no local storage, and Cloudflare states that it does not fingerprint visitors. A content blocker that blocks static.cloudflareinsights.com stops it.

What is stored in your browser

The site's own code keeps these items in your browser's local storage:

  • Your analytics choice, as one entry named measure-3e78 with the value granted or denied.
  • If you use the light and dark switch, that choice, as one entry named drawnmath-tone with the value light or dark. It is written only when you press the switch.

The site's own code sets no cookies. Cookies from Google Analytics appear only when it loads, as described above.

The search box filters a list of article titles, summaries and categories that is published as part of the site and loaded into your browser. What you type stays in your browser and is not sent anywhere.

Email

If you write to contact@drawnmathematics.com, your address and message are used only to handle what you wrote about. They are not added to a mailing list and are not sold. Questions about this page can go to the same address.

Advertising and other third parties

There is no advertising on this site. If that changes, this page will name the advertising provider, explain its cookies and say how to opt out before any advertisement appears.

Fonts are served from this site itself, so reading a page does not contact a font service. Pages contain no social media embeds and no other tracking code.

Changes to this page

When this page changes, the date shown with its title changes with it.
